Primary Grant Focus

Education Development Center (EDC) is focused on revising current Developmental Math Ideas (DMI) professional development curriculum so it explicitly connects to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and serves as a more effective tool to help participants understand the CCSS Mathematical Standards of Content and Practice.

Strategies for Supporting Common Core Success

Education Development Center’s DMI professional development materials for K-8 teachers of mathematics have been in use for more than a decade. Although pedagogically aligned with CCSS, they don’t reflect explicit connections. To better support the professional development of current and new facilitators, who use the DMI materials with teachers, coaches, administrators and parents, EDC is revising facilitator guides for two eight-session modules. Revisions to the guides will make explicit how the DMI classroom cases illustrate students engaged with the Common Core Mathematical Content and Practice Standards, how participants’ own mathematical activities provide the context for understanding those standards more deeply, and how participants explore the principles of CCSS-aligned instruction. Before the DMI facilitator guide supplements are published online and presented at professional conferences, the revised materials will be field tested, including analysis of pre-/post-assessments of the participating educators.
