Primary Grant Focus
New Teacher Center (NTC) aims to 1) accelerate teacher awareness of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)-aligned instructional shifts through a series of Multiple Online Open Courses (MOOCs) targeted at middle and high school teachers; and 2) provide differentiated support for new teachers who are beginning to implement instruction aligned with the CCSS.
Strategies for Supporting Common Core Success
New Teacher Center offers web-based professional development to educators across the country, using multiple online delivery mechanisms to advance teacher knowledge of CCSS and to support teacher mentors who are guiding new teachers in effective ways to implement CCSS-aligned instruction.
- NTC is one of five teacher professional development organizations that has partnered with Coursera to offer MOOCs. Teachers across the country may enroll in two five-week introductory courses—Introduction to Literacy Design Collaborative (LDC) and Introduction to Math Design Collaborative (MDC)—for an interactive, scaffolded learning experience focused on integrating these CCSS-aligned frameworks into lesson and unit planning.
- NTC supports two long-standing national networks of teacher leaders and instructional leaders who mentor and prepare new teachers. To build their capacity as mentors, teacher leaders engage in both face-to-face and online professional learning opportunities to improve their ability to support new teachers in mastering CCSS-based instruction. Through Mentor Forums, teacher leaders attend online professional learning sessions, watch videos about LDC and MDC, and access materials and tools to share with new teachers.
